‘Just Like Clockwork’: The Importance of Routine in Creating Stability for Our Kids

As parents, we all want the best for our children. We strive hard to provide them with nurture and stability in the home environment so we support their growth and development. One super powerful tool in achieving this is the making of routines. Routines offer a sense of predictability, structure, and security for children, allowing them to thrive emotionally, mentally, and physically. In this blog post, we will delve into the importance of routines and explore how they contribute to creating stability for your child.

1.      Establishing a Sense of Security: We all feel secure when we have a predictable routine to rely on and children are no exception to this. Routines create a comforting framework that helps children understand what to expect from their day-to-day lives. Whether it's a morning routine before school or a bedtime routine before sleep, consistent patterns allow children to feel safe, both reducing anxiety and promoting a sense of stability. This is so helpful, especially as we are seeing an increase in mental health issues among young people and children currently.

2.      Promoting Emotional Well-being: Routines can have a profound impact on a child's emotional well-being. When children know what to anticipate, they feel a greater sense of control over their environment. This control helps give a foundation on which to build confidence and resilience, as they have more headspace to handle any unexpected situations if the majority of their life is relatively controlled. Routines also provide opportunities for emotional connection, things such as regular family meals or dedicated quality time spent on homework, hobbies or just having fun together create a strong bond between members of the family and help kids feel important.

3.      Developing Life Skills: Routines offer an excellent opportunity for children to develop important life skills. Through regular practice and repetition, children learn essential tasks like personal hygiene, organization and forward planning, time management, and personal responsibility. This can start when kids are young. For example, if a young child is supported in a morning routine that includes getting dressed, brushing teeth, and packing a nursery bag then they are slowly given more and more responsibility as part of the process this teaches them valuable skills that they will carry into adulthood.

As adults, we might get bored if our day-to-day is too predictable, but kids are learning and processing so much all the time that even the smallest extra tasks at nursery/school or extra clubs can take their toll on them. Coming home to predictability and a routine helps kids process all the extra stuff they’ve learned and faced that day without overwhelming them with any new information or decisions to be made.

5.      Improving Sleep Patterns: A well-established bedtime routine is particularly crucial for children's sleep health. Consistently following a calming routine before bed signals to the child's body and mind that it's time to unwind and prepare for sleep. This helps regulate their circadian rhythm (the rhythm that tells our body when its time to to sleep and wake up), promoting better sleep quality and quantity. Sufficient sleep, in turn, contributes to improved mood, concentration, and overall well-being. Which is a Win, Win, Win!

6.      Building Discipline and Self-Regulation: Routines teach children the importance of discipline and self-regulation. By adhering to a structured routine, children learn to prioritize and manage their time effectively. If we can remind them as they take part in routines how they’re helpful and make sure they are understanding the benefits it gives them then they are sure to appreciate going through them (or at least one day they will, probably when they forget to do it once!) Through routine, they’ll also develop a sense of responsibility, as they understand that certain tasks need to be completed before moving on to other activities. These skills become invaluable as they grow older and face increasing demands and responsibilities.

In a world that often feels chaotic and unpredictable, establishing routines can provide a stabilizing force for your child's well-being. Routines offer a sense of security, promote emotional well-being, develop important life skills, enhance cognitive abilities, improve sleep patterns, and build discipline and self-regulation.
